We started the concept of “restoring the order of mankind” and “serving elders” because that is exactly what our brother, son and friend Jehru Meari Donaldson was doing with his life, especially on the day it was taken from him.
After a morning of helping our father with painting and landscaping for family and friends, Jehru decided to take his girlfriend and her nephews to see our Pirates play baseball. While picking up his company to take to the game he was approached by two men with guns demanding his car. With kids and innocent bystanders near Jehru’s instincts were to push the gun away and drive to safety. He never made it and one-shot took his life all too soon. He was just 18, freshly graduated from Oliver high school with a diploma, football city championship, and sights on attending college in the fall.
This was July 2007 when we began fighting for justice, making sure Jehru would not die in vain and making sure his legacy lived on. Our non-profit organization P.R.O.M.I.S.E. was born that same year and we received the proclamation from the city of Pittsburgh on July 9, 2009, as our day. Since then we have sent numerous high school graduates to college with financial help through the Jehru M. Donaldson scholarship foundation, started a book club, organized numerous community clean up days, career days at schools, open mic talents show, stop the violence rally’s and our now 10th annual free 3-day basketball camp.
With numerous programs, staff members, and expenses to fulfill our mission, we rely on our community as well to help keep us giving back to our youth, while also keeping in mind our elders who paved the way for many organizations leading their respective communities.
